How to Carve a Pumpkin with a Stencil
From printer to glowing jack-o'-lantern in about an hour.
What you need
- A printed stencil (that's what the generator is for) β regular printer paper is fine
- A pumpkin, carved-face side up, stem out of the way
- Serrated pumpkin saw or a small keyhole saw
- A poker: thumbtack, toothpick, or the poky end of a pumpkin tool
- Tape, a scoop for the guts, and a marker for last corrections
Step 1 Β· Cut the lid and hollow out
Cut the top at an angle so the lid doesn't fall in, scoop the seeds, and scrape the carving wall until it's about an inch thick β thin walls are much easier to cut and let more light through.
Step 2 Β· Print and size your stencil
Measure the flat-ish face of your pumpkin and pick the matching width in thestencil generator β 5 in for small pumpkins up to 12 in for giants. Print at 100% scale (no βfit to pageβ β that changes the physical size).
Step 3 Β· Tape it flat
Letters warp on curved pumpkins. Tape the sheet so the text sits flat, even if you have to crease the paper slightly at the edges. Wrinkles under the tape are where crooked letters come from.
Step 4 Β· Poke the lines
With a poker, poke small holes along every black line β about every 1/8 inch (3 mm). Feel for the black areas too: their outlines get poked as well. Peel the paper off when done and keep it nearby as a reference map.
Step 5 Β· Cut in the right order
Cut the smallest shapes first β the islands inside letters like O, B, A β then the inner lines, and the long outer lines last. Push each cut piece out from the inside with a finger; if a piece resists, it's still bridged (that's on purpose β bridges hold letters together) and it will fall away as you finish the surrounding cuts.
Step 6 Β· Light it
A battery tea light or a string of LED lights is safer than candles and won't cook your pumpkin. For extra glow, scrape the inside wall behind the letters thinner.
Troubleshooting
A letter broke in half
The bridge was too thin for your knife work. Regenerate with a thicker bridge (0.08β0.10 in) β bridges are adjustable in the generator.
The stencil wouldn't sit flat
Use damp paper towels between the pumpkin and paper, or cut the sheet into strips and tape each letter's section individually.
Letters look too thin after carving
Long words on small pumpkins get thin strokes. Use a shorter word, a wider size, or a chunkier font like Anton or Luckiest Guy.
